VP of Engineering

Engineering Director
Within an organization, the engineering director is responsible for all aspects of the engineering activities.  They ensure that all projects conform to pre-determined guidelines and regulations and discover any plan changes to be made as a project is carried out.  Management skills and experience are often prerequisites for this career.

Engineering Manager
Employed by organizations to ensure projects are in compliance with company guidelines, these managers often assume many responsibilities.  They plan and direct all engineering activities, conduct tests, and maintain reporting tools to ensure projects are on schedule and created exactly as planned.  If any changes are deemed necessary, they must receive approval before making the needed changes. 

Chief Engineer
Common duties of a chief engineer include the development, enhancement, and improvement of products within the engineering department.  They establish goals and plans of an engineering department, working jointly with other professionals and providing accurate engineering expertise when necessary.

Engineer
Engineers use scientific knowledge and formal systems to find practical solutions to daily problems.  They often plan and direct complex operations geared toward gaining efficiency, productivity, or accuracy.  Extensive education and experience are needed for this position.

Research and Development Engineer
Before the creation of a new product, a research and development engineer will research all elements relating to each project.  This research is used to make accurate calculations and develop specific product plans.  They then review all literature/marketing, and schedules to ensure they are following specifications precisely. 

Sales Engineer
To ensure proper promotion of goods and materials, sales engineers are employed to endorse company products.  A thorough knowledge of competitor products is necessary in order to make excellent sales comparisons.  They will often create detailed reports that highlight product strong points and use this information in their presentations.

Engineering Technologist/Technician
These trained techs assist engineers to ensure quality work is completed.  They may participate in numerous tasks and prepare necessary documents for advanced engineers.  They also maintain computer files and programs and review all documents before they are presented to clients or contractors.

Engineering Secretary
As assistants to top engineering executives, these administrative assistants prepare materials, maintain records, and organize schedules as needed.  They are the first contact to clients and customers so they must maintain professionalism and courtesy at all times.  Discretion and confidentiality may be necessary when dealing with certain materials.
