Engineer I Engineer to Support Offshore Energy Research The AEWC Advanced Structures and Composites Center is seeking an Engineer I. The successful candidate will work in the AEWC 72,000 ft2 laboratory with a world-leading team of over 120 faculty, staff and students who conduct research with a variety of public and private entities developing the next generation of low-cost, high-performance composite materials. Purpose: The purpose of this position is to manage and execute engineering research and development project assignments. This position will support Offshore Energy Research. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Designs and conducts tests, interprets and analyzes data, writes reports and presents findings to team members; operates and maintains sophisticated scientific testing equipment to conduct research. Develops and writes work instructions and executes changes in drafts as required; participates in providing monthly progress reports to the program manager as well as to clients and sponsors. Writes industrial contract proposals to obtain funding; assists in writing technical reports and papers detailing research and development activities for journals, periodicals, clients, and sponsors; arranges schedules for industrial contracts. Monitors project budget and recommends allocation of dollars accordingly; researches, recommends and determines specifications for purchase of equipment, materials and supplies for use in research projects. Supervises a team of undergraduate students in research and laboratory activities; supervises operation and maintenance of testing equipment; instructs others in the use of equipment; provides safety and environmental management supervision and advice for undergraduate students. Communicates with vendors to establish purchase specifications for research and testing materials, non-capital equipment and capital equipment; participates in meetings with clients; as part of each project, interacts positively with a team of post-doctoral fellows, peers, AEWC laboratory staff, students and faculty. Knowledge and Skill Qualifications: B.S. in Civil or Mechanical Engineering required; Engineering Intern Certificate required. Advanced coursework or equivalent experience in some of the following areas: programming and analysis of data using Matlab, design/testing of dynamic systems desired. Coursework in aerodynamics, hydrodynamics, and ocean engineering desired. Experience in wind turbine design, construction or testing desired. Demonstrated ability to quickly learn new theory and design techniques and incorporate into work. Excellent oral and written communication skills required. Demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects and constant deadlines. Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment with faculty, post-doctoral fellows, lab technicians, management, students, and research sponsors required. Supervisory Responsibilities: The employee will be responsible for assisting graduate and undergraduate students in area of expertise. Salary: The proposed salary for this position is $34,695 - $57,827 depending on qualifications. This position is contingent on funding and successful performance.
