The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) South Regional Division (SRD) maintains liaisons with directors and division heads of the General Office and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) officials, public service agencies and the general public. This team of engineers and support staff has contributed to enhancements that are present throughout southern New Mexico.
As a valued new employee to NMDOT, you may be eligible to receive three (3) days of administrative leave upon your start date. This is applicable to external hires not within the State of New Mexico Government.
Why does the job exist?
The purpose of this position is to provide technical support in the development of standard drawings, project specifications and Notices to Contractors ensuring that these contract documents correspond to highway and bridge construction plans. This entails coordination with the Project Development Engineers, District staff, Department subject matter experts and consultants.
How does it get done?
The primary responsibilities of the Engineering Technician IV position will include:
* Perform preparation of the most complex exhibits, plans, engineering calculations and cost estimates.
* Collaborate and confer with developers, architects, engineers, contractors and the general public.
* Interpret and explain laws, codes and regulation related to development activities.
* Perform the most complex Geographic Information System (GIS) operations.
* Lead in the preparation of reports to be used by professional and managerial employees.
* Perform preparation of drawings, plans, maps for most complex Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) production. .
* Maintain official maps, drawing and master plans; research and reference material for public and staff use.
* Interact with staff who may be in the field or in an office setting.
* Assist with permitting processes.

The New Mexico Department of Transportation staff and consultants.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have preferred education and/or experience in the following:
* Design and construction of highways/bridges, including experience with Computer Aided Drafting/Design (CADD) programs.
* Technical reports writing.
* Preparation of the most complex exhibits, plans, engineering calculations and cost estimates.
* Proficiency with computer applications.
Minimum Qualification
High School Diploma or equivalent and six (6) years of relevant experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required experience.

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment.
Employment requires successful completion of a pre-employment physical exam and is conditional pending results.
Reference check and Driver's License verification are required and employment is conditional pending results.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting. Exposure to: Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT), extensive personal computer and phone usage. Sitting/standing for extended periods of time and extended periods of work at a computer terminal with some bending may be required. Communication with the general public and public agencies on a frequent basis. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Occasional statewide and out of state travel maybe required.
