Job Description
Title: Mechatronics Engineer
Location: Hybrid Remote and onsite CLT and Hickory areas
SCOPE OF POSITION
The Mechatronics Engineer will contribute to the development, design, and integration of advanced automation systems into manufacturing processes. This role involves the design, development, and delivery of precision automation solutions to meet stringent performance and reliability criteria. The candidate will leverage their expertise in Mechanical/Electrical engineering, Control systems, instrumentation, motion systems and robotics, programming, and system integration to drive innovation and continuous improvement, while ensuring safety and industry standards compliance. Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders are essential for success in this role.
DAY TO DAY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Design, develop, and implement mechatronic systems and solutions to improve automation and manufacturing processes
2. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand automation requirements, stakeholder objectives, and engage in project planning
3. Develop control algorithms and software for automation systems, including PLC programming and HMI design
4. Integrate actuators, sensors, control systems, and industrial robotic into automation equipment
5. Conduct data analysis, troubleshoot, and optimize system performance to meet stringent precision and reliability requirements
6. Model systems using fundamental engineering principles, conduct simulations, and execute data analysis using various methods and software tools to validate designs and optimize performance
7. Provide technical support and training to manufacturing personnel on the operation and maintenance of automation systems
8. Prepare and deliver detailed project documentation, technical reports, and presentations to stakeholders including progress updates and project outcome
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
This is a hybrid assignment. Most work can be done remotely with the expectation that the candidate will travel to Corning plant and vendor sites as needed to support projects. Trips could be one day to one week at a time.
WORK SCHEDULE:
Typically M-F, 8-5:00, Some weekends may be necessary to support project installations
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor's or master's degree in Electrical, Mechanical Engineering, or related degree with a focus on automation and control systems engineering with a minimum of 5 years' industry experience
REQUIRED SKILLS (These are skills that candidates MUST possess)
Proficiency in designing, developing, and implementing mechatronic systems
Experience with automation control technologies, such as PLC programming, HMI, and SCADA systems
Familiarity with industrial communication protocols (e.g., Modbus, Profibus, Ethernet/IP)
Strong understanding of feedback control systems, including PID controllers
Knowledge of sensor integration and data acquisition systems
Understanding of manufacturing electrical systems, design, and troubleshooting
Experience with vision systems and image processing techniques
Experience with embedded systems and microcontroller programming
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Ability to work with interdisciplinary teams and communicate technical concepts effectively
Knowledge of industry standards and safety protocols related to mechatronics and automation systems
Attention to detail and a commitment to quality and continuous improvement
DESIRED SKILLS (These are skills that would be nice for candidates to possess)
Proficiency in simulation and modeling software such as Simulink or LabVIEW
Experience with industrial robotics, including kinematics, dynamics, and robotic control algorithms
Experience with programming languages such as C, C++, Python, and MATLAB
Experience with Manufacturing 4.0 principles, machine learning and artificial intelligence applications in automation and robotics is a plus
Strong project management skills and the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously
Experience with advanced control strategies, such as adaptive control, robust control, and nonlinear control
Ability to design and optimize mechanical components and systems using CAD software
SOFT SKILLS (Communication/Team/Leadership)
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Ability to convey technical information to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
Experience in preparing and delivering presentations and reports
Ability to work closely with stakeholders to understand their requirements and ensure their needs are met
