Job Description
RK&K is seeking a motivated and creative Traffic Design Project Engineer with Four (4) to eight (8) years of experience to join our highly successful traffic group in our Wilmington, Delaware office. RK&K's Traffic team provides high-profile traffic and ITS design services through multiple traffic engineering and ITS open-end contracts for clients in Delaware and surrounding states. Our projects focus on improving operations and safety for motorized traffic and vulnerable road users, providing healthy and livable communities, and implementing technology-based transportation improvements. As a Traffic Project Engineer with RK&K you will work alongside and collaborate closely with one of the largest, most talented groups of traffic engineers and transportation professionals in the industry. You will play a crucial role within our team, developing traffic engineering and ITS designs to improve transportation systems throughout the region.
Essential Functions
Perform a variety of tasks, including traffic engineering design plans and preliminary engineering design
Support projects for all modes of travel including highway, bus, rail, bicycle and pedestrian in urban, suburban and rural environments
Develop components of traffic management strategies such as active transportation management, traffic signal systems, and AI based systems
Prepare documentation and design plans for traffic control devices, including Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), traffic signals, signing and pavement markings, temporary traffic control, and roadway and pedestrian lighting
Prepare technical specifications and cost estimates for development of construction documents
Perform construction phase services such as shop drawing review, field meetings, and red line revisions
Prepare technical reports and presentations
Required Skills and Experience
Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering
Four (4) to Eight (8) years of progressive experience in traffic engineering
Exceptional writing, verbal communication and presentation skills including public speaking
Experience with MicroStation, GuideSIGN, AGI32, and Adobe Acrobat/BlueBeam
Experience with Highway Safety Manual, Highway Capacity Manual, Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and AASHTO guidelines
Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) in the state of Delaware or ability to obtain in six (6) months
Writing, verbal communication and presentation skills including public speaking
Preferred Skills and Experience
Master's Degree in Civil Engineering
Certified Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE)
Project management experience

RK&K's Traffic team provides services to support traffic signal studies, traffic operations activities, and Traffic Management Center planning and design activities. As a Traffic Operations Engineer with RK&K you will work alongside and collaborate closely with individuals with outstanding technical knowledge and the ability to successfully implement effective traffic management strategies. You will play a crucial role within our team, developing and implementing new traffic management strategies and refining existing elements.
Essential Functions
Traffic engineering studies: transportation operational analyses, traffic simulation modeling, and traffic data collection
Traffic management: developing operations plans and monitoring programs
Signal operations: evaluating and optimizing traffic signal system timings and parameters considering vehicle and pedestrian flow
