This position will be filled at either the R D Engineer 2 or R D Engineer 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
The W93 System Development and Realization Group (Q-20) is seeking a Research and Development Engineer 2/3 to be part of the Mechanical Qualification team. You will work the Mechanical Qualification Lead to plan and execute tests and analyses to support the evidence required during product development and ultimately qualification.
The Mechanical Engineer will directly support the Mechanical Qualification Lead and partner with Q-20 system engineers, product realization teams, and other qualification domain team leads to execute the mechanical qualification program. The selected candidate will support the execution of early tests and analyses focused on understanding how the initial W93 design performs against the customer requirements for both the tactical War Reserve system and the surveillance bodies known as Joint Test Assemblies and tests and analyses late in the program focused on collecting qualification evidence. They will interface with the NNSA and US Navy customers, Sandia National Laboratories, and Lockheed Martin Space.
This is an opportunity to be part of the first new weapon system program in over 30 years. Q-20, W93/Mk7 Systems Development and Realization Group, defines, develops, and fields the warhead system for the newest Navy sub-launched ballistic missile weapon program. We support the DoD/Navy SSP and DoE/NNSA customers in defining the mission need and corresponding technical and programmatic requirements. The W93 collaborates closely with Sandia National Laboratories and Lockheed Martin Space design agencies, developing the re-entry system, ensuring safe, secure, & reliable warhead performance and a relevant nuclear deterrent. Q-20 also incorporates the production agency teams (KCNSC, Pantex, SRS, Y-12, LANL, and SNL) tightly into the design, qualification, and realization processes.
R D Engineer 2 $104,100 - $172,200
At the R D Engineer 2 level, you will manage the planning, execution, and reporting for a subset of tests and analyses within the Mechanical Qualification portfolio. You will interface regularly with internal LANL organizations to accomplish these activities and be involved in external collaborations.
R D Engineer 3 $125,200 - $211,300
In addition to the R D Engineer 2 activities, an R D Engineer 3 will provide interface with external partners on a regular basis and manage a larger number of tests and analyses. Additionally, they will provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior staff supporting these mechanical efforts.
