Scientific Drilling is looking for a Mechanical Engineer I or II to join our Applied Technologies Center in Paso Robles, CA. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles and design as well as experience using analytical abilities and tools to solve challenging engineering problems.

Our Mechanical Engineer will work in our Research and Development Department and is expected to perform the essential duties listed below. Candidates must have authorization to work in the United States.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist in the development and testing of mechanical components and systems using mechanical engineering theory and application principles.
  • Assist in the design of mechanical systems and components for use in down-hole drilling and production logging applications where tools must function to 150C+ temperatures and survive a high vibration environment.
  • Utilize apparatus and procedures to test mechanical components and systems.
  • Prepare engineering documents and specifications for product and systems operation.
  • Examine schematics, technical drawings, and supporting documents to develop, compute and verify specifications, such as configuration of parts, dimensions and tolerances.
  • Perform engineering duties by planning and designing tools and mechanically functioning equipment.
  • Integrate product design and structure into the Company's new or existing systems.
  • Assist in the research, design, evaluation, installation, operation, and maintenance of mechanical products, equipment, tools, assembly, systems and processes to meet requirements for product improvement and development.
  • Collaborate with drafters and designers on the structural design of products; utilize computer-assisted design (CAD) software including SolidWorks.
  • Address customer and field service reliability and safety issues with timely engineering analysis and design solutions.
  • Adhere to and improve safety standards.
  • Evaluate failed system scenarios and determine root-cause in conformance with the Quality Management System (QMS).
  • Provide engineering support to manufacturing, production and purchasing.
  • Collaborate with engineers, project managers, customers, vendors or other business partners on engineering projects.
  • Assist with the development of written procedures and process documentation.
  • Travel domestically or internationally may be required, up to 25%.
  • Manage work station and practice good housekeeping techniques.
  • Pursue every job with drive and determination.
  • Use logic to solve problems with effective solutions.
  • Perform other relevant duties as assigned by the needs of the business.
  • Maintain inventory of R&D stock.
  • Actively improve quality performance and the effectiveness of the Quality Management System (QMS) by: not passing a defect or non-conformance downstream and fully understanding, diligently following and executing documented procedures to meet our quality objectives.

Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the practical application of mechanical engineering science and technology including applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to test and production.
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including design, use, repair, and maintenance.
  • Creation of technical documentation using a combination of CAD, MS Office, and other resources.
  • Demonstrated capabilities of design execution and product development.
  • Ability to work in fast paced and results driven environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to multitask.
  • Good organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to present oneself with professional appearance and behavior in accordance with SDI dress code and SDI Code of Conduct.
  • Ability to meet all SDI/ATC safety requirements.
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions.
  • Ability to read, communicate, and understand the English language.
  • Communicate effectively with managers and peers, both written and verbally.
  • Adhere to established Company procedures and policies, work schedule, attendance standards and is punctual to work and meetings.
  • Good team player/builder; contribute to team effort by accomplishing related results. Must be tactful and able to resolve disputes between departments and settle personnel

Education, Experience, Certification, and Training:

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or related engineering discipline.
  • 0-5 years' experience in engineering.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with SolidWorks a plus.
  • Experience with advanced computational software (FEA, CFD) a plus.
  • Familiarity with ISO 9001 and ANSI Y14.5 a plus.

Work Environment, Physical Job requirements and PPE:

  • Ability to walk, stand, sit, kneel, push, reach above the shoulder, grasp, pull, bend repeatedly, climb stairs and ladders, hear with aid, see , write, count, read, speak, analyze, lift and carry up to 40 lbs., operate a motor vehicle, and operate motor equipment.
  • Equipment (machines, tools, devices) used in performing the essential job function include but not limited to computer and related equipment, calculator, special instrumentation, forklift, pallet jack, hand tools, power tools, air tools, telephone, and automobile. Ability to wear proper personal protective equipment (PPE), including but not limited to, safety glasses, hardhat, reinforced toed shoes, coveralls, gloves, and ear plugs or muffs.
