About the Position

At Maricopa County's Planning and Development, we provide our Engineering Supervisors with consistency and the opportunity to balance work with their social life. As an Engineering Supervisor, you can expect a consistent 40-hour a week schedule that will challenge and encourage you to learn new aspects of engineering.

In this role, you will lead a team of Professional Engineers and Engineering Associates as they review permit applications for construction projects, planning cases (entitlement), and assist with on-call services to address customer inquiries. You will review a variety of projects from residential to commercial/industrial and subdivisions while interacting with consulting engineers, developers, homeowners, inspectors, and contractors. You will also act as a liaison to coordinate with other County permitting agencies, including the Flood Control District, MCDOT, Environmental Services, and Real Estate.

This position offers the option of part-week teleworking, a 9/80 flex schedule, and flexible core business hours.

We Require

  • Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering, Landscape Architecture, Surveying, Hydrology, Environmental Science, Geology, or a related field

  • Six years of engineering experience, including work experience in engineering project management

  • Postgraduate degrees or professional-level-related experience may substitute for the education or experience on a year-for-year basis

  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in the state of Arizona

Job Contributions

  • Supervise Engineers and subordinate staff by assigning and directing work, providing training, establishing goals, evaluating performance, counseling and disciplining employees as needed, and preparing and approving work schedules; responsible for interviewing and selecting Engineers and engineer support staff

  • Review site plans, civil engineering grading plans, and drainage reports to ensure compliance with County Zoning, Drainage, Department of Transportation, Flood Control District, and stormwater regulations and requirements

  • Review hydrologic and hydraulic calculations submitted in support of civil engineering grading plans. Confirm that the calculation methodology meets County standards and procedures

  • Represent the assigned department at various meetings with other County departments, government agencies, and the public

  • Meet with various levels of staff, including leadership, engineers, contractors, and the public, to clearly communicate engineering and plan requirements

  • Assist leadership in developing departmental goals, providing input regarding departmental policies, and recommending and implementing process improvement efforts

  • Provide clear and accurate technical guidance to other departments, the regulated community, consultants, attorneys, other regulatory agencies, and the public regarding environmental regulations, testing issues, zoning ordinances, traffic issues, floodplain issues, etc.

  • Ensure project deliverables meet department standards

Working Conditions

  • Exerting up to 10 pounds occasionally or negligible weights frequently; sitting most of the time

  • Position is typically office or administrative work and is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions. Position may require infrequent site visits
