ABOUT THIS POSITION
The Street Transportation Department, Traffic Services Division, is responsible for ensuring the safe movement of traffic and pedestrians. Its responsibilities include street signs, traffic signals, left-turn arrows, school safety, removal of visibility obstructions, on-street parking, neighborhood cut-throughs, traffic safety, and permits for using the right-of-way.
The Traffic Services Division, Arterial Systems Management Section, is seeking a motivated and dedicated Traffic Engineer I to join a diverse, hands-on team. This position involves the application of professional traffic engineering work at the entry professional level and intelligent transportation systems (ITS) knowledge, including skills to a wide variety of engineering functions that will assist in developing our traffic signal infrastructure.
The Traffic Engineer I position will apply professional traffic engineering knowledge and skills. The main work of this position will be preparing transportation studies, which involve computing and analyzing data gathered from field studies to plan and execute traffic signal retiming programs. This role will also assist in developing and implementing strategies for improving arterial traffic flow and safety, utilizing system performance measurement tools, assisting in evaluating ITS equipment, and assisting in providing ITS engineering support to the Traffic Management Center and Traffic Signal Shop. The Traffic Engineer I will interact professionally and proactively with internal and external partners to ensure a seamless service is provided to the traveling public. The Traffic Engineer I will report to the Traffic Engineer III (Senior ITS Traffic Engineer).
IDEAL CANDIDATE
- Must be comfortable presenting reports, proposals, and findings.
- Capacity to work autonomously while managing workload and meeting deadlines.
- Comfortable working in high-pressure environments and completing tasks on time.
- Strong interpersonal skills with a focus on professional conduct in public engagements.
- Expertise in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and desktop publishing programs.
- Knowledge of transportation and traffic engineering principles, such as traffic flow, signal systems, road design, and safety standards.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey information clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Demonstrated ability to:
- Learn and use other relevant software tools for project management or data analysis.
- Use sound judgment and patience while resolving issues and responding to public inquiries.
- Prioritize tasks effectively, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and meet deadlines with attention to detail.
SALARY
Pay Range: $35.08 to $51.83 per hour.
Hiring Range: $35.08 to $38.68 per hour.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, including courses in traffic engineering.
- Other combinations of experience and education which meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
- All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position.
- Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:
- An Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certificate and /or a Professional Engineering license from any U.S. state.
- Experience using Light Rail Train (LRT) firmware.
- Experience programming Econolite ASC/2,3/Cobalt traffic controllers.
- Experience using modeling software such as Synchro and WaySync.
- Experience working within a traffic management center (TMC).
- Experience with calculating, programming, and troubleshooting traffic signal timing and operations.
- Experience and knowledge of intelligent transportation systems (ITS) applications, technologies, including Advanced Transportation Management Systems (ATMS).
