District Recruitment for Rapides Parish:

The overall function of this position is to assist professional engineers and/or higher-level technicians in the performance of materials testing and documenting results in the District Laboratory. This includes materials sampled and tested during the design, construction and maintenance phases of LADOTD projects. This position is located in the District 08/Engineering Section/Unit 158/Rapides Parish (40) of the Department of Transportation and Development and reports directly to the Engineering Technician 7 Supervisor.

The incumbent must be self-motivated and be able to perform duties many times with minimal supervision and be able to interpret unforeseen conditions as they may arise. The incumbent will participate in appropriate DOTD structured training programs as appropriate and attend continuing education classes and conferences deemed necessary to facilitate the performance of required tasks.

While in the official capacity, DOTD employees must comply with applicable Louisiana and Civil Service laws, rules, and regulations as well as DOTD policies, procedures, manuals, and directives.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a high school diploma or GED.

SUBSTITUTIONS:

Six months of experience in sub-professional engineering, heavy mobile equipment operation, or mobile equipment maintenance will substitute for the high school diploma or GED.

Job Duties and Other Information

Job Duties:

60% Assists the District Lab Engineer (Engineer 6} and/or Engineering Technician 7 (Supervisor) in the sampling and testing of construction materials for use on DOTD construction projects to ensure compliance with DOTD policies, procedures, and specifications. Performs and assists laboratory materials testing in the soil, concrete, aggregate and asphalt sections for acceptance and verification for both DOTD and FHWA Independent Assurance Testing. Assists in performing field investigations to conduct subsurface soil surveys, shallow borings, base and surface course acceptance measurements and construction verification for both DOTD and FHWA Independent Assurance Tests. Assists with Dynamic Cone Penetration Testing (DCP) as required by DOTD EDSMs.

15% Attends required training classes and receives on-the-job training in performing materials sampling and/or testing. Complete all training for Materials Testing Specialty areas as required by the position. May also provide on-the-job training or assistance to newer or lower-level technicians.

10% Assists the ET 7 with the materials quality assurance documentation program by maintaining an accurate and thorough inventory of all materials sampled. Keeps accurate notes of all testing conducted. Enters test data into appropriate computer database and retrieves information and/or procures reports as necessary. Stays current with the latest developments in the Materials Management software.

10% Assists in the proper maintenance of all testing equipment, which may include cleaning, routine calibration, maintenance and certification of sampling and testing equipment.

5% May be required to perform other duties as necessary including, but not limited to, emergency/disaster activities.

Career Progression: This position may be filled as Engineering Technician 1, 2, 3, or 4 depending on the level of experience of the selected applicant(s). Work Schedule: Monday-Friday from 7:00AM to 3:30PM.

Compensation:

  • Engineering Technician 1 - Starting salary is $12.22/hourly with an additional $2.00 optional pay for every hour worked.
  • Engineering Technician 2 - Starting salary is $14.00/hourly with an additional $2.00 optional pay for every hour worked.
  • Engineering Technician 3 - Starting salary is $16.03/hourly with an additional $2.00 optional pay for every hour worked.
  • Engineering Technician 4 - Starting salary is $18.35/hourly with an additional $2.00 optional pay for every hour worked.
