The overall function of this position is to perform sub professional engineering tasks and oversee construction projects to which assigned. This position is located in the District 08/ Unit 248 of the Department of Transportation and Development and reports directly to the lead Engineering Technician 7.The incumbent must be self-motivated and be able to perform duties many times without supervision or with minimal supervision and also be able to interpret unforeseen conditions as they arise. The incumbent will participate in DOTD structured training programs as appropriate and attend all continuing education classes and conferences deemed necessary to facilitate the performance of required tasks. While in the official capacity, DOTD employees must comply with applicable Louisiana and Civil Service laws, rules, and regulations as well as DOTD policies, procedures, manuals, and directives.

Job Duties:

  • Assists the District Lab Engineer (Engineer 6} and/or Engineering Technician 7 (Supervisor) in the sampling and testing of construction materials for use on DOTD construction projects to ensure compliance with DOTD policies, procedures, and specifications .

  • Attends required training classes and receives on-the-job training in performing materials sampling and/or testing. Complete all training for Materials Testing Specialty areas as required by the position. May also provide on-the-job training or assistance to newer or lower-level technicians .

  • Maintain an accurate and thorough inventory of all materials sampled. Enters test data into appropriate computer database and retrieves information and/or procures reports as necessary.

  • Maintain all testing equipment, which may include cleaning, routine calibration, maintenance and certification of sampling and testing equipment.

  • May be required to participate in emergency/disaster activities.

Position-Specific Details:

This position has the following special requirements:

  • Ability to use computer

  • Ability to sample and submit IDs for materials, run air and slump tests for concrete, etc.

  • Create and maintain pay item spreadsheets, be proficient with site manager, fill out asphaltic concrete roadway reports.

  • Pass drug screening

Appointment Type: Probational or Promotion

Career Progression: This position may be filled as Engineering Technician 1, 2, 3, or 4 depending on the level of experience of the selected applicant(s). Work Schedule: Monday-Friday from 7:00AM to 3:30PM.

Compensation:

  • Engineering Technician 1 - Starting salary is $12.22/hourly with an additional $2.00 optional pay for every hour worked.
  • Engineering Technician 2 - Starting salary is $14.00/hourly with an additional $2.00 optional pay for every hour worked.
  • Engineering Technician 3 - Starting salary is $16.03/hourly with an additional $2.00 optional pay for every hour worked.
  • Engineering Technician 4 - Starting salary is $18.35/hourly with an additional $2.00 optional pay for every hour worked.
