We Energies, a subsidiary of WEC Energy Group, is seeking a Major Projects Manager. This position can be located at any of our WEC Energy Group power generation and renewable locations in Wisconsin. This position offers flexibility for a hybrid work arrangement (remote/on-site).

This position will support projects and programs that are part of WEC Energy Group’s $13.2 billion electric generation capital investment plan, which will power economic growth and provide energy reliability in the state of Wisconsin. An additional 1,800 megawatts (MW) of electric demand is expected in the state between 2025 and 2029 — an increased electric load of approximately 20%. 

Job Summary

The Major Projects Manager is an expert level position that will utilize a solid understanding of project management and will be expected to manage large power generation construction projects which are fundamental to the success of the company and often on the CEO Top 10 list. Responsibilities include project development, permitting, technical design, creating project estimates & schedules, and construction execution. This job will work with leadership to create and promote project strategies, provide high level consulting to peers, and provide training and mentoring to other staff.

Job Responsibilities

  • Provides project management leadership for major and/or multiple capital construction projects
    • Identify project team resource requirements
    • Staff team with internal and external resources
    • Develop and manage project goals, processes, and procedures
    • Manage and monitor the performance of the team
  • Identify and/or thoroughly evaluate project design and construction issues and develop innovative solutions
  • Develop and implement regulatory strategies for environmental and PSCW permits related to the construction of the project and the ultimate operation of the related equipment
  • Develop and implement construction and design practices to reduce costs and improve efficiency
  • Communicate effectively with senior management about the project progress. Presents them with recommendations for resolution to issues
  • Interact and negotiate with industry experts, major equipment manufacturers, contractors, regulatory agencies and other officials on key issues
  • Negotiate contracts for major construction work and equipment supply. Projects may include use of new technology and equipment that may affect negotiation strategies
  • Lead cross functional team of internal and external resources in the execution of projects
  • Ensures that all work is performed safely, is of high quality, follows appropriate work procedures and construction standards, and is completed on schedule, within budget and according to the engineered design
  • Develop project execution strategies, including engineering, procurement, construction planning and oversight, commissioning and testing
  • Ensure major contractors and suppliers meet their obligations under the contracts terms, conditions and guarantees
  • Monitors and manages key project metrics and cost controls to achieve construction, operational and budgetary goals

 

Candidates must be able to think strategically, conceptually, analytically, and creatively and must possess highly developed interpersonal skills. The candidate needs to be able to work effectively with senior management. This employee may have other engineers and technicians as direct supervisory reports.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Project Management, or other relevant field. In lieu of a Bachelor’s Degree, fifteen years of proven experience in the essential functions of the Major Project Manger’s role may be considered
  • This position requires a minimum of 10 years of experience and is responsible for one or more larger and/or a multiple number of smaller projects at one time
  • Candidates must possess proven project management, planning and organizing, budgeting and business acumen skills; as well as problem solving, leadership and decision-making abilities

Preferred Qualifications

  • It is preferred that candidates have a demonstrated track record of effectively communicating and functioning in diverse environments including those in political, union, environmental and regulatory agendas
  • Past experience managing major power generation construction projects is a plus
