About Blue Laser Fusion (BLF):

BLF is a startup based in Goleta, CA, developing a high-energy laser system to enable laser-driven inertial fusion energy (IFE). Following the success of the National Ignition Facility at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, BLF aims to create a high-energy, high repetition-rate laser capable of sustaining repeated nuclear fusion reactions. Qualifications:

  • MS/Ph.D. in Physics, Mechanical Engineering, or related field with a relation to fusion.
  • Strong background in relatable mechanical engineering
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Hands-on experience with mechanical design of relatable systems
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively in a fast-paced research environment
  • Comfort with working on new technologies with tbd best practices and design rules
  • 3D printing skills

Job Description:

We are seeking a highly skilled engineer with a background in mechanical design for high energy systems to join our dynamic team. This role requires a comprehensive understanding of mechanical, optical, electrical, chemical and materials engineering principles as they apply to nuclear fusion research, including reactors, lasers, targets, and injectors. The successful candidate will work on-site, collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to advance our fusion research initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

Initiate the interdisciplinary research, development, and design of a laser inertial fusion energy reactor that aligns with the Blue Laser Fusion advancements in laser technology, fusion targets, and reaction dynamics. Collaborate with adjacent engineering teams to ensure the integrity and functionality of the reactor and energy systems. Collaborate and manage relationships with vendors, universities, and government laboratories.

On-site Work:

Work hands-on at our research facilities, overseeing experimental setups, troubleshooting technical issues, and ensuring the safe operation of fusion experiments. Provide mechanical design support for the laser optical enhancement cavity and test facilities development. Use engineering design and analysis software to develop engineering drawings and analyzethermal, structural, degradation and other mechanical effects in unique environments.

Travel : Able to travel within the U.S., Japan, and Europe.

Communication:

Effectively communicate research findings, project updates, and technical insights to colleagues and stakeholders. Produce high-quality written reports and presentations for both internal and external audiences.
