Job Responsibilities

As the District One Bridge Engineer for Kershaw, Lee, Lexington, Richland and Sumter counties, manages, plans, and supervises the District One Bridge Maintenance Unit in performing routine, structural, and emergency repairs of bridges, as well as the Unit's bridge replacement projects. Manages, plans, and supervises field inspections of District One Bridge Maintenance Unit projects and activities to ensure timely and efficient completion of projects. Attends project progress and utility meetings. Coordinates bridge maintenance activities with Chief Engineer for Bridges, Headquarters Bridge Maintenance Office, bridge inspection teams, and inspection consultants concerning bridge closures, load postings, repairs, and replacement projects. Serves as support liaison to the Regional Production Group (RPG), and District One Utility Coordinator, Resident Construction Engineers (RCE), Bridge Maintenance Office, and District Construction staff concerning activities for bridge projects in District One. Serves as emergency coordinator liaison for SCDOT District One and County Emergency services during EOC (Emergency Operations Center) activations and mock exercises concerning bridges including the Bridge Watch and Scour Monitoring program and the Bridge "Shakecast" Selsmic Monitoring Program. Supervises Bridge Maintenance Unit staff in work assignments to ensure that all activities are performed in accordance to Departmental procedures, policies, and standards. Supervises staff to include performance planning and evaluation documents and related personnel paperwork. Coaches, counsels, and trains employees. Conducts interviews for new hires. Coordinates, establishes and monitors bridge work progress and reports statuses to the District Engineering Administrator, and the Headquarters Bridge Maintenance Office. Implements management policies and initiatives and promotes teamwork within the organization. Prepares yearly line item budget for the District One Bridge Maintenance Unit operations and monitors budget expenditures. Reviews and approves Purchase Orders, Requisitions, weekly and monthly reports.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

A bachelor's degree in Engineering and eight (8) years of engineering work experience. Necessary Special Requirement: Registration as a Professional Engineer by the South Carolina State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Surveyors. A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required.

The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve sitting or standing for extended periods of time. This position may require travel. This position may require bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, and kneeling. This position requires driving and walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. This position may be exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions and noise.

Additional Comments

May be required to work overtime, nighttime, and/or weekends during hazardous weather or emergencies.
