Northrop Grumman Mission Systems Combat Sensors Engineering located in Linthicum, MD is seeking a motivated Mechanical Engineer to join our high-performance team supporting the design of both platform hardware and test equipment. This unique role supports the mechanical design of not only platform hardware such as radar systems, electronic warfare systems, subcomponents, subassemblies, and flight test equipment, but also factory production test equipment used to test antennas, electronics chassis, circuit card assemblies, modules, and electronic subassemblies and components.
Typical roles and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Design new or modify existing antenna, Line Replaceable Units (LRUs), wired chassis, Line Replaceable Modules (LRMs), Circuit Card Assemblies (CCAs), backplanes, cables and cable harnesses, and flight test equipment
- Layout and design liquid cooled, air cooled, and gas cooled electronic assemblies, subassemblies, and components
- Design new or modify existing Interface Test Adapters (ITAs), fixtures, test sets, antenna compact range, near field range, and head-count test equipment, rack mounted test equipment, test benches, coolant manifolds, integrated test assemblies, associated cabling, coolant hoses, and other mechanical or electromechanical systems to satisfy customer requirements
- Understand and design high power test equipment and bus bar design along with all related safety best practices
- Research and develop procedures, methods, and tools for testing hardware conformance to documented and derived system requirements
- Sensitivity to cost, schedule and quality as well as Northrop Grumman policies and procedures is imperative
- Operate/maintain equipment, cooling systems, chillers, and pneumatic and electronic controls
This role is contingent upon candidates having a current Active Secret Clearance.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) discipline with 5 or more years engineering experience; Master of Science degree in a STEM discipline with 3 or more years of experience. An additional 4 years of experience is acceptable in lieu of a degree.
- United States Citizenship.
- Active DoD Secret Clearance.
- Experience successfully reading and interpreting schematics, block diagrams, sketches, oral and written instructions, manufacturer's specifications/operation manuals, and analyzing hardware configurations
- Experience working independently and collaborating as part of a cross-functional team with other engineers, facility engineering, maintenance, and contractors
- Ability to support program meetings in developing root cause and corrective actions
- Experience troubleshooting or supporting technicians in troubleshooting issues with test equipment or the hardware under test and provide suggestions for improvement and optimization
- Verify equipment operation and performance of test equipment by making necessary calculations
- Ability to work in a hands-on lab environment, conduct site surveys, organize and direct hardware installations, calibrate sensors, and assemble and disassemble manifolds, fixtures, and environmental screening equipment
- Ability to test equipment and use troubleshooting/verification tools such as ammeters, voltmeters
Preferred qualifications:
- Understanding of Common Radar Module (CRM) and VITA connector standards for conduction cooled, liquid flow through, and air flow through LRMs
- 3D CAD modeling proficiency with NX and Teamcenter
- Familiarity with Teamcenter
- Ability to create Solution Packages (SPs)
- Ability to create Engineering Changes (ECs)
- Ability to review, approve, and or identify alternate parts in component database to disposition Component and Material Requests (CMRs)
- A basic knowledge of thermal and structural analysis and circuit card design
- Proficient with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and tolerance stack up analysis
- Understanding and proven experience with design for manufacturability, usability, and human factors
- Experience with mechanical and/or electromechanical systems used to test hardware for use in military applications
- Ability to lead a team of engineers and/or junior engineers, delegate work, and drive a successful design, and implementation/use
- Experience with design of automated handling and automated test equipment
- Experience with material handling equipment such as fork trucks, hand carts, rigging, indoor bridge cranes, and man-lifts
