Position Overview

Kiewit Infrastructure Engineering has an opening for a highly Experienced Naval Architect in our Temporary Works Group. The ideal candidate will be a part of a growing team that supports all aspects of the construction process by performing innovative design engineering through brainstorming conceptual designs, performing and/or reviewing structural calculations, developing plans, scheduling tasks to meet client needs, as well as mitigating risk to keep our construction crews safe.

Kiewit is on a mission to have the premier marine construction fleet in North America. This group is dedicated to achieving that mission and supports design-build and build-build projects by providing analysis, design, and oversight for marine-related temporary works including the following: Temporary bridges and trestles, Cofferdams, Bridge falsework, Overwater construction platform, Barges and derricks, Marine Bulkheads, Marine shoring systems, Heavy Lift and RO/RO Operations, and Deep in-water foundations for keystone bridge projects.

A critical part of this mission is modernization and maintenance of our existing marine construction fleet, as well as construction of new vessels consisting of derrick cranes, deck barges, and other specialized floating construction equipment including floating falsework, and mooring design and analysis.

The Senior Naval Architect will be responsible to lead our preliminary and detailed structural design efforts and hydrodynamics on marine equipment and structures, supporting engineering integration, managing design, providing technical mentorship to team members, and contributing to construction estimating, scheduling, and planning efforts. Additionally, they will be responsible for connecting with the Operating Districts, developing a strong trusting relationship with the main stakeholders in districts, understanding their engineering support needs in the Marine, Ports, Maritime, and Coastal space. The successful candidate will contribute with their energy, enthusiasm, collaborative approach, and leadership to achieve the quality and safety objectives of the projects to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Act as a Senior Naval Architect as part of the Temporary Works Naval Architecture design team on pursuits and projects requiring engineering including:

o Heavy lift and RO/RO planning (site logistics, equipment selection, geometry/feasibility studies, design of custom equipment, hoisting and jacking systems, custom tools, and crane pad / working surface designs on barges).

o Erection and ballasting procedures or planned sequences related to construction or demolition operations.

o Evaluation of existing vessels for construction loads and/or demolition planning.

o Mooring and hydrodynamic analysis of floating vessels and in-water structure, work platforms, trestles, etc.

o Structural analysis of barges and equipment, design of equipment support systems.

o Modernization of existing marine equipment and design and construction of new equipment.

  • Be the primary technical leader for a group of dynamic engineers & naval architects working on a broad range of multi-disciplinary project.
  • Perform and/or review others' calculations and design drawings, according to industry codes, standards, additional client design criteria, and structural and stability theories.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to ensure project success.
  • Conduct site inspections and provide technical support and oversight during operations.
  • Ensure quality and accuracy of the design deliverables.
  • Help to identify design risks and assist with risk mitigation planning.

  • Unique to the Kiewit model: act as a facilitator of collaboration with construction teams during the design phase. Take advantage of access to the construction team to achieve a design that is truly optimal for construction.
  • Assist in Project Management (budgets, schedules, quality control, and coordination / communication with operations districts and clients).
  • Mentor and lead engineers in their technical development.
  • Contribute to technical proposals.
  • Support the development of the TW Marine engineering team by building internal tools and processes.

Qualifications

  • Experience with marine construction equipment, naval architecture, and hydrodynamics - could be in any single or a variety of different industries.
  • Accredited Bachelor of Science degree in Civil or Structural Engineering; Master's degree or greater in Naval Architecture or similar field is preferred.
  • 20+ years of relevant engineering/naval architecture experience.
  • 5+ years of managing an engineering and design team of at least 5 engineers/naval architects.
  • Professional Engineer licensure or eligibility within the United States and Canada.
  • Strong all-around academic knowledge of structural engineering, mechanical engineering and naval Architecture.
  • Experience with engineering design software will be an advantage; this includes AutoCAD, BlueBeam, MathCAD, SAP2000, Solidworks, RISA-3D, OPTIMOOR, FEMAP etc.
  • Experience with vessel classification and regulatory agencies; this includes: The Jones Act, ABS, DNV, Loyd's
  • Experience with working in a team setting.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, with individuals at all levels of the organization.
  • Strong inter-personal skills and an ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
  • Ability to organize and handle multiple project assignments.
  • Ability to freely access all points of a construction site in wide-ranging climates and environments.

Base Compensation: $175,000/yr - $206,000/yr
