About the Role

As the City Engineer, you will oversee and guide engineering design, planning, and construction for public infrastructure, including streets, drainage, utilities, and capital improvement projects. You'll provide expert technical direction, manage projects from concept to completion, and ensure Sherwood's growth is supported by safe, sustainable, and forward-thinking infrastructure.

This is a hands-on leadership role that works closely with city administration, elected officials, developers, and residents - blending technical expertise with collaboration, communication, and innovation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage all city engineering operations, plans, and projects.
  • Develop and review design standards, specifications, and capital improvement plans.
  • Provide technical support for planning, zoning, and development review.
  • Oversee project budgets, contracts, and compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Coordinate with other city departments and regional agencies to advance infrastructure priorities.
  • Supervise engineering staff and consultants with a focus on excellence and service.

What We're Looking For

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or related field.
  • Arkansas Professional Engineer (P.E.) license, or ability to obtain within 6 months.
  • Proven leadership experience in municipal or public sector engineering.
  • Strong communication, problem-solving, and project management skills.
  • Passion for community service and sustainable development.

Qualifications

Must possess a valid Arkansas Class D (Non-Commercial Vehicle) Driver's License before employment and maintain licensure for the duration of employment in this position. Bachelor's Degree in the engineering field, or equivalent technical degree required; BSCE or MSE desired; A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in managing a professional engineering function is desired; Government and/or Civil Engineering experience is preferred. Must possess a Professional Engineer's License and maintain licensure throughout employment in this position. Wastewater management experience is a plus and State Wastewater II License is also preferred. Certified Floodplain Manager (CFM) preferred.
