Job Description
We are seeking an experienced Controls Engineer to join our team at a leading manufacturer of power
and distribution transformers. In this hands-on role, you will design, develop, document, and support the control
systems and wiring that ensure safe, reliable operation of power and distribution transformers. You will play a critical
role in delivering custom-engineered transformer solutions to utility, industrial, and renewable energy customers
across North America and internationally.
Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities
Design and develop detailed control wiring schematics, wiring diagrams, and interconnection drawings for power and distribution transformers.
Create and maintain bill of materials (BOMs), terminal block layouts, and control panel layouts.
Specify and select control components including protective relays, temperature controllers, annunciators, SCADA interfaces, and auxiliary equipment.
Ensure all control designs comply with applicable industry standards (IEEE, ANSI, IEC, NEC, UL, CSA).
Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and testing engineers to integrate control systems with transformer core/coil assembly, bushings, radiators, and monitoring devices.
Support manufacturing by providing clear wiring instructions, conducting internal design reviews, and resolving control-related issues on the production floor.
Participate in factory acceptance testing (FAT), site acceptance testing (SAT), and customer witness tests.
Troubleshoot control and wiring-related issues during manufacturing, testing, and field commissioning.
Continuously improve standard control packages and wiring practices to reduce cost and lead time while enhancing quality and reliability.
Maintain accurate revision control and documentation throughout the product lifecycle.
Skills/Qualifications
Qualifications & Experience
Education: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field (required).
Experience: 2+ years of direct experience in controls design for power transformers, distribution transformers, switchgear, or medium/high-voltage electrical equipment.
Strong working knowledge of liquid-filled transformer accessories and controls (winding temperature indicators, oil level gauges, pressure relief devices, etc.).
Proficiency with AutoCAD Electrical or similar CAD software.
Solid understanding of control circuits, protective relaying, and communication protocols (DNP3, Modbus, IEC 61850).
Familiarity with UL, CSA, IEEE C57 series standards, and NEC requirements.
Preferred Skills & Attributes
Hands-on experience in a transformer manufacturing environment.
Knowledge of grounding and safety practices in high-voltage environments.
Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, schematics, and customer specifications.
