Overview of Project Engineer - Machine Design
A Project Engineer in Machine Design leads the design, development, and validation of mechanical systems, custom machinery, and production equipment. The role blends engineering expertise with project management to deliver high-quality mechanical solutions that improve performance, reliability, and manufacturability.
Key Responsibilities
Machine Design Engineering
Design, develop, and validate mechanical systems, assemblies, and custom production equipment
Develop detailed CAD models, engineering drawings, and perform FEA/stress analysis
Conduct design reviews, tolerance analysis, and feasibility studies for mechanical concepts
Oversee fabrication, assembly, and validation of mechanical equipment and tooling
Ensure systems comply with safety standards
Project Management
Lead machine design projects from concept through deployment, including scope, schedule, and budget management
Coordinate cross-functional teams: mechanical, electrical, controls, manufacturing, and external integrators
Prepare project documentation: functional specifications, risk assessments, FAT/SAT protocols, and change orders
Track project milestones, identify risks, and implement corrective actions
Technical Support & Continuous Improvement
Provide on-site support during system build
Analyze field and production data to identify machine design improvement opportunities
Required Skills & Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or related engineering field preferred
Hands-on experience with mechanical design, GD&T, material selection, and machine component design
Understanding of machine design, sensors, pneumatics, motion control, and industrial networks (EtherNet/IP, Profinet, DeviceNet)
Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, and P&IDs
Analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills
Ability to manage multiple projects in fast-paced manufacturing environments
Knowledge of lean manufacturing and Six Sigma principles
