Transmission Line Engineer - Fully Remote

  • Los Angeles, California
  • Full Time

Job Title: Transmission Line Engineer

Job Description

This role focuses on the design and delivery of overhead transmission line and tower projects, typically ranging from 69 kV to 500 kV, from conceptual engineering through construction support. You will perform detailed engineering, lead and coordinate multidisciplinary teams, and provide technical leadership on assigned projects. Candidates with civil or mechanical engineering experience are preferred, though experienced electrical engineers in transmission may also be considered. Experience with California utilities and familiarity with General Order 95 safety standards for overhead electric lines and communication facilities are highly valued. The position offers the opportunity to contribute to complex, large-scale infrastructure projects and to build a long-term career path in power delivery engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare detailed engineering calculations, specifications, drawings, and scope documents to support complete construction packages for transmission line and tower projects.
  • Lead and coordinate design engineers and technical staff to deliver high-quality transmission line designs on schedule and in accordance with project requirements.
  • Review and validate technical reports, engineering studies, and design documents to ensure accuracy, compliance with standards, and constructability.
  • Coordinate with contractors, permitting agencies, and internal disciplines to support project execution and resolve technical issues.
  • Provide construction and field support, including responding to requests for information, clarifying design intent, and addressing site conditions.
  • Apply project management practices to ensure engineering quality, safety, and effective execution across all phases of the project lifecycle.
  • Contribute engineering expertise across multiple power delivery projects, including lines, poles, and towers, and support continuous improvement of design practices.
  • Develop and refine PLSCADD models, including route alignment, plan and profile drawings, and structural analysis for transmission structures.
  • Prepare and review assembly, framing, loading, and design drawings for wood, concrete, steel, FRP, and lattice structures, with a focus on lattice towers where applicable.
  • Interpret geotechnical data to support foundation design, embedment calculations, and structural performance evaluations.
  • Integrate survey and GIS data into transmission line models to ensure accurate design, clearances, and constructability.
  • Communicate complex engineering concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, supporting informed decision-making throughout the project.

Essential Skills

  • 45+ years of transmission line engineering experience, with a strong preference for 820 years of experience in transmission line and tower design.
  • Professional experience in civil or mechanical engineering; experienced electrical transmission engineers may be considered.
  • Proficiency in transmission line design using the PLS software suite, including PLSCADD, PLSPole, and PLSTower.
  • Demonstrated experience with high-voltage transmission line design, including 69 kV to 500 kV systems.
  • Strong knowledge of conductors, hardware assemblies, structure detailing, and preparation of bills of material.
  • Experience developing assembly, framing, loading, and design drawings for wood, concrete, steel, FRP, and lattice structures.
  • Ability to interpret geotechnical data and apply it to foundation design and embedment calculations.
  • Experience working with survey and GIS data and integrating these datasets into PLSCADD models.
  • Proficiency with design and analysis tools such as PLSCADD, PLSPole, PLSTower, LPile, MFAD, and Microsoft Office.
  • Familiarity with industry standards and codes including ASCE, ACI, IEEE, NESC, RUS, and GO95.
  • Self-motivated, with strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in team environments, manage workloads, and support stakeholder expectations.
  • Strong technical communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain complex engineering solutions to technical and non-technical audiences.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working with California utilities or other U.S. utilities on transmission line projects.
  • Familiarity with California General Order 95 safety standards for the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of overhead electric lines and communication facilities.
  • Exposure to related electrical studies such as EMF, grounding, fault current, contaminants, and clearance analysis.
  • Experience with lattice tower design and analysis.
  • Ability to provide technical leadership within project teams and mentor less experienced engineers.
  • Interest in long-term career growth in power delivery, including pathways into technical specialization, project leadership, or adjacent disciplines.

Work Environment

You will work within high-caliber, collaborative engineering teams that emphasize knowledge sharing, technical rigor, and mutual support. The environment offers exposure to complex, large-scale infrastructure projects across multiple markets, providing variety and technically meaningful work rather than repetitive or siloed assignments. Engineers benefit from a culture that supports career longevity, with multiple paths for advancement in technical expertise, project leadership, and cross-disciplinary development. Flexible work arrangements and a high degree of trust and autonomy are common, particularly for experienced professionals, supporting a healthy worklife balance. You will use modern engineering tools and software, including the PLS suite (PLSCADD, PLSPole, PLSTower), LPile, MFAD, and Microsoft Office, while collaborating closely with internal disciplines, contractors, and external stakeholders in a professional, safety-focused setting.
