Job Description
Summary
The Component Engineer supports electronic and electromechanical component management across the product lifecycle, including selection, qualification, classification, and obsolescence mitigation. Works closely with electrical design, supply chain, and manufacturing teams to ensure components are technically appropriate, available, and compliant. Applies practical electrical design knowledge to understand component function within circuits and to interpret and analyze electrical Bills of Materials (BOMs), schematics, and related documentation. Evaluates component specifications, identifies lifecycle risks, and recommends qualified alternates or second sources. Contributes to component database management, engineering documentation, and crossfunctional problem resolution. Actively supports continuous improvement of component engineering processes through the development and implementation of automation solutions and integration of data analytics and AIbased tools to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and scalability.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Support and collaborate with electrical and mechanical design engineers during component selection to ensure components meet electrical performance, environmental, reliability, and manufacturability requirements
Independently interpret and analyze electrical Bills of Materials (BOMs) to verify part correctness, parametric alignment, lifecycle status, and sourcing strategy
Review electrical schematics, BOMs, parts lists, and assembly documentation to understand component application within circuit designs
Perform BOM scrubbing activities, including identification of obsolete, invalid, incomplete, or non-preferred components, and recommend qualified alternates or second sources
Create, maintain, and update component records in the internal component database (e.g., Component Control Numbers (CCNs), approved alternates, and sourcing notes)
Track and assess End of Life (EOL) notices, Product Change Notices (PCNs), and manufacturer discontinuation risks
Participate in EOL planning, supply chain alert meetings, and cross functional reviews to mitigate component availability risks
Support or perform component level testing and evaluation of alternate or substitute components; document results and recommendations based on experience level
Apply practical electrical design knowledge to evaluate technical impact of component substitutions and engineering changes
Collaborate with Supply Chain, Planning, and Procurement to ensure component availability does not disrupt production or sustainment activities
Engage with Import/Export Control and Trade Compliance teams to assist with component Export Control Classification Numbers (ECCN) and Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) classifications
Support Receiving and Inspection with component identification and verification questions
Generate and maintain component related engineering documentation, including Source Control Drawings and Altered Item Drawings, where applicable
Communicate effectively with engineering, manufacturing, quality, and supply chain stakeholders across a concurrent engineering environment
Education and/or Experience
Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline from an ABETaccredited program preferred
1-3 years of relevant experience in component engineering, electrical hardware engineering, or electronic product development
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
