Overview

Quarterhill is seeking a System Engineer who will be responsible for designing, sourcing, integrating, testing, validating, and supporting complex systems that combine OEM and COTS hardware, software, networking, electronics, and connected-device technologies. This role will work closely with project engineering, operations, vendors, and internal stakeholders to ensure solutions are technically sound, properly documented, validated for production, and successfully deployed in the field.

The ideal candidate has practical experience with integrated hardware and software systems, strong troubleshooting skills, and the ability to evaluate technical requirements, test results, and system performance data to make informed engineering decisions.

Responsibilities

System Design, Integration and Validation

  • Design, source, integrate, test, and maintain OEM and COTS components within complete system solutions.
  • Support integration of software systems with OEM products, including routers, cameras, PoE injectors, dimensioning systems, industrial control panels, embedded computers, sensors, and connected devices.
  • Develop and maintain system architecture documentation, system diagrams, test requirements, hardware build requirements, and validation plans.
  • Establish testing requirements for new products based on electrical, software, operational, and performance specifications.
  • Create, execute, and support validation plans, field trial plans, and Factory Acceptance Test plans from concept through manufacturing deployment.
  • Validate system designs for production readiness, reliability, serviceability, and deployment suitability.

OEM and COTS Product Evaluation

  • Research and evaluate new OEM technologies, COTS hardware, software platforms, and connected-device products.
  • Review technical specifications, integration requirements, compatibility constraints, and vendor documentation.
  • Perform lab testing, field testing, and technical assessments to determine product suitability.
  • Provide recommendations on product selection, system design improvements, risk mitigation, and preventative measures.

System Troubleshooting and Technical Support

  • Troubleshoot complex systems involving integrated hardware, software, networking, electronics, and IoT components.
  • Analyze technical issues, determine root causes, and provide practical solutions.
  • Support project engineering and operations teams during deployment, commissioning, and technical issue escalation.
  • Identify recurring issues and recommend corrective actions, process improvements, and preventative maintenance strategies.

Documentation and Training

  • Create and maintain documentation to support installation, deployment, testing, validation, troubleshooting, and ongoing maintenance of complex systems.
  • Deliver technical documentation, training material, and knowledge-transfer content to project engineering and operations teams.
  • Document explicit and implicit system operational concepts through interaction with stakeholders, project teams, vendors, and end users.
  • Ensure technical documentation is accurate, clear, version-controlled, and suitable for both engineering and field operations use.

Project Execution

  • Independently manage day-to-day execution of assigned engineering initiatives within agreed timelines and budgets.
  • Coordinate activities across internal teams, vendors, and external stakeholders.
  • Track technical risks, open issues, testing progress, and deployment readiness.
  • Support projects from early concepts and product selection through design, testing, validation, deployment, and production support.

This list of responsibilities might not cover everything you'll end up doing.
