POSITION SUMMARY:
The Product Development Engineer role will focus on Precision Engineering andserve a pivotal role on the Amphenol CS's Cable Backplane ProductDevelopment team. The ideal candidate will blend expert knowledge fromelectrical and mechanical engineering to develop, design, and maintain themechanisms on our next generation of high speed cabled backplanes. The ProductDevelopment Engineer will design float mechanisms, cartridges, and similarmechanisms that enable our cabled backplanes to solve our customer's needs. Thisrole also requires interaction with internal manufacturing sites, externalvendors, and all of the other engineering disciplines within the organization.
A strong candidate should be motivated by technical challenges, know how to be atruly collaborative member of a team, and be willing to wear a number of hatsthroughout the many phases of a project.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Understand the evolving industry needs, and resultant requirements for ourproducts.Significant participation in automation design, working directly with theNPI and Machine Design (automation) teams to ensure the product design can bebuilt in high volume, efficiently, and with the highest quality.Work directly with Signal Integrity (EE) team to ensure the mechanicaldesign supports the electrical performance requirements of the product.Work directly with Mechanical Integrity team to ensure the mechanical designprovides for a high reliability (quality) over the life of the product.Including meeting all applicable industry, and internal, specifications.Collaborate with software engineers to integrate electronic control systemsinto mechanical frameworks as needed.Aid in material selection (metal, plastic, surface coatings, etc).Develop initial product specifications and technical documentation.Interface directly with customers during multiple phases of a project, andaiding in the sales process.Work directly with internal and external suppliers on Design for Manufacture(DFM), prototyping exercises, production tooling design and qualifications, andoccasional travel to manufacturing and assembly sites around the world.Provide technical assistance to product marketing and sales teams as needed.Participate in fixture/tooling design and in creating and managing testplans.Active participation in cost reduction projects (alternative materialdiscovery, manufacturing efficiency improvements, etc).Occasional requirement of making presentations to upper management onprojects/development.Occasional required attendance of industry trade shows, expositions,conferences.
Qualifications:
MS/BS in Engineering with significant experience in an electronics industryrequired; PhD in Engineering preferredA robust understanding of both mechanical and electronic systems is crucial,as is expertise in computer-aided design (CAD) software(Creo, Solidworks, etc.)Minimum of 5+ years industry experience in design, preferably within theprecision engineering disciplineStrong analytical and problem-solving skills; work history of collaborationand execution during the various stages of product designGood understanding of GD&T methodologies, experience in tolerance analysis,and FEA toolsKnowledge of copper alloys and high-performance engineering plastics,experience designing and working with CNC milled parts and/or in sheet metalfabricaitonProficiency with MS Office suiteAbility to communicate with both technical & non-technical stakeholdersAbility to work in a dynamic team environmentAbility to manage multiple tasks and projects concurrentlyAbility to travel ~15% domestic and international
