Process Engineer - Generation (Birmingham)

WORK LOCATION
This position is located in Alabama (Birmingham).
This position requires travel (up to 50%), both day-trip and overnight (including some air travel).
This position will require a mix of both field and office work.
Some relocation assistance is available if the selected candidate currently resides outside the Birmingham area.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Environmental Solutions department within Southern Company's Technical Shared Services is currently seeking candidates for the position of Process Engineer. This position is responsible for providing corporate engineering support for Southern Company's power generation fleet. The role involves a mix of field and office work, supporting various projects in electric generating plants, including current and future water treatment, wastewater treatment, air emissions control and other chemical processes.
Primary Responsibilities:
Provide process engineering support for water and wastewater treatment systems and projects across the Southern Company fleet
Develop and review conceptual designs, design basis documentation, and technical specifications
Evaluate supplier proposals
Review engineering drawings and packages to ensure compliance with company specifications & guidelines as well as pertinent codes & regulations
Troubleshoot plant processes across the fleet and monitor/analyze operating data for process improvements
Support the design and execution of pilot programs and/or testing to demonstrate process performance and environmental compliance
Effectively communicate complex topics to various working groups both internal and external to Southern Company
Effectively work with various stakeholders across Southern Company
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Education :
Bachelor's degree in Engineering required
Chemical Engineering preferred
Other degrees may be considered with significant relevant experience.
Experience:
At least 4 years of experience with heavy industrial processes required (e.g., power generation, paper mill, petrochemical, refinery, gas operations, pipeline, etc.)
Exposure to plant environments preferred
Specification, commissioning, and troubleshooting of mechanical and chemical process operations preferred
Water treatment systems experience preferred
Project and/or team leadership experience desired
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
Knowledge of fossil-fueled power plants and pollutant emission control systems
Strong analytical ability to grasp advanced technical concepts for problem solving and troubleshooting
Ability to manage multiple projects with varying schedules and priorities
Familiarity with process safety and inherently safe design principles
Strong oral and written communication skills
Strong presentation skills
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications
