As a key member of the Technical Services group, this position provides structural engineering expertise and support to Facilities Design and Construction (FDC) project managers, design and construction teams, operations, stakeholders and university at large operating with a high degree of autonomy. The role serves in an advisory capacity, supporting project visioning and execution across campus development efforts.
This position is responsible for identifying, reviewing, and advising on structural best practices and technical considerations throughout all phases of planning, design, and construction. All work aligns with University Standards, project requirements, and industry best practices.
As part of FDCs Technical Engineering team, the structural engineer contributes to a range of tasks, including design reviews, engineering design support, infrastructure studies, and the development and maintenance of University Building Design Standards. The position also consults on long-range planning, budget development, and policy formulation to ensure structural systems meet performance, safety, and regulatory expectations.
The role acts as a liaison between project management teams and other technical services staff, fostering collaboration and coordination across disciplines and campus stakeholders. Responsibilities include evaluating project feasibility, recommending alternatives, and determining the most effective approach for implementation. The engineer ensures compliance with applicable local, state, federal, and institutional codes, including hospital and healthcare design regulations where applicable.
This position supports both new construction and the existing campus environment, including advising on repair strategies and infrastructure resilience. The engineer works proactively with stakeholders to provide options, build consensus, and enable informed decision-makingprioritizing proactive planning over reactive response.
Collaboration is essential to this role, with regular interaction across operations, maintenance, academic units, and external consultants. Technical specifications and standards developed or supported by this position directly influence campus-wide infrastructure reliability, safety, and sustainability.
Hours and days may vary based on project needs. This position may be required to respond to 24-hour emergency calls as part of FDCs support for critical campus infrastructure
Experience:
REQUIRED: Licensed professional engineer; minimum 4 years experience in structural design relating to facilities and infrastructure projects, preferably in a consulting engineering office; valid Driver's License; DESIRED: 4-8 years experience in structural design of large complex projects for institutional facilities. knowledge and experience in Local, State, and National Codes and Standards; knowledge and experience in the use of software for structural design and analysis; experienced and capable of utilizing MS Office software.
Additional Information:The target hiring range for this job profile is $87,400 - $114,900. The actual salary paid to an individual will vary based on multiple factors, including but not limited to, education, years of experience, internal equity, etc.
