Job Description
Intercon is seeking a Process Engineer with a background in Mechatronics/Engineering to support and improve manufacturing processes in a cable and wire harness assembly environment. The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of mechanical, electrical, and control systems and will play a key role in developing work instructions and interpreting customer drawings to ensure accurate and efficient production.

- Review and interpret customer drawings, wiring diagrams, and specifications to develop accurate and comprehensive manufacturing work instructions.
- Design, implement, and optimize mechatronic systems to improve cable assembly operations, including semi-automated or fully automated equipment.
- Collaborate with production, quality, engineering teams, and customers to ensure that all assembly processes meet internal and external standards.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives to increase throughput, reduce waste, and improve quality.
- Evaluate current manufacturing methods and propose enhancements involving robotics, sensors, and automation controls.
- Specify and source tools, fixtures, and equipment needed to support cable assembly and testing processes.
- Perform time studies, process mapping, and workflow analysis to enhance efficiency.
- Provide training and guidance to production staff on new or updated work instructions and process changes.
- Assist in troubleshooting and resolving technical production issues, including mechanical and electrical failures.
- Ensure compliance with industry standards, safety protocols, and customer requirements.
- Demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of Intercon’s capabilities and limitations concerning manufacturing processes, production tooling/equipment, and test equipment.
- Evaluates customer requirements to ensure that Intercon or a qualified subcontractor can successfully manufacture the product.
- Facilitates the NPI process to bring new products to fruition in a timely and efficient manner. Initiates the procurement of production tooling, production and test equipment, and test fixture components. Submits work requests for fixtures, jigs, mold tooling, harness boards, and other devices fabricated in-house.
- Maintains work instructions, BOMs, drawings, and other related documentation in accordance with ISO 9001 and SOP requirements.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
- Associate’s degree in Mechatronics, Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, or related field.
- 3+ years of experience (preferred) in a cable assembly, wire harness, or related manufacturing environment.
- Proven experience creating technical work instructions based on customer prints and specifications.
- Familiarity with wire termination, crimping, soldering, labeling, and other cable assembly processes.
- Strong understanding of PLC systems, automation controls, and mechatronic integration.
- Proficiency in CAD software (SolidWorks, AutoCAD) and Microsoft Office for documentation.
- Excellent communication skills and attention to detail.
- Experience with IPC/WHMA-A-620 standards for cable and wire harness assemblies.
- Working knowledge of ERP/MRP systems for BOM and routing development.
- Experience with test equipment integration and custom tooling for cable assemblies.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Standing/Walking: Ability to stand and walk for extended periods while on the production floor.
- Manual Dexterity: Frequent use of hands and fingers to handle tools, components, wiring, and equipment.
- Lifting: Occasionally lift, carry, and move objects up to 11–20 pounds, including tools, materials, and components.
- Visual Acuity: Must have adequate close vision to read technical drawings, inspect cable assemblies, and work with small components.
- Bending/Reaching: Regularly bend, reach, stoop, and kneel to access equipment, workstations, and wiring assemblies.
- Tool Use: Operate hand tools, crimping equipment, measuring instruments, and other devices associated with cable assembly and process improvement.
- Auditory Requirements: Must be able to hear equipment alarms, instructions, and verbal communication in a noisy manufacturing environment.
- Computer Work: Extended periods working on a computer to develop work instructions, review drawings, and perform documentation tasks.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals.
