DTSC seeks a Hazardous Substances Engineer/Project Manager to join a team of environmental scientists, toxicologists, geologists, and engineers within the Berkeley Site Mitigation and Restoration Program. You will manage the investigation and cleanup of complex or large contaminated properties in the San Francisco Bay Area, including projects in environmental justice communities. As a Hazardous Substances Engineer you will have the opportunity to:

  • Review and/or prepare technical engineering reports and other documents including, but not limited to, Phase I reports, Preliminary Endangerment Assessments, Resource and Cost Recovery Act Facility Assessments, site characterization workplans and reports, sampling and analysis plans, human health and ecological risk assessments, pilot and treatability studies, feasibility studies, remedy selection documents, design, implementation, completion reports, operation and maintenance plans, five-year reviews and long-term monitoring reports for compliance with approved plans
  • Evaluate site characterization data to support engineering remedial design and implementation
  • Review or develop process flow and instrumentation diagrams, and design plans and specifications of engineering remedy
  • Plan and maintain a workload consisting of multiple projects with sometimes conflicting deadlines to ensure all assignments are completed on time and within budget
  • Prepare and maintain accurate project schedules to facilitate allocation of resources
  • Prepare estimates for oversight costs for each assigned project and follows up with the Responsible Parties to ensure payment of invoices of billed activities

Desirable Qualifications We Look For:

  • Degree in Environmental Engineering or associated engineering discipline preferred
  • Experience planning or managing environmental site investigation and remediation projects
  • Experience leading community meetings on scientific or engineering topics
  • Certification as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or licensed as a California Professional Engineer desired
