ISO New England's Resource Integration team is an industry leading team that analyzes generator and transmission simulation models¸ conducts studies, develops procedures for new study methods, and participates in standards development, to ensure the reliable addition of new solar, wind, storage, and other types of generation to the New England transmission system. Specifically, the position conducts: model acceptance testing and verification analyses for new and existing generating resources, manages generating resource models throughout the lifecycle of the plant (interconnection study /commissioning/post-commissioning phases), simulates and analyzes power system behavior, and develops study methodology and practices recommendations of which contribute to the reliability and the New England power system in support of its clean energy transition.

How you will make an impact:

  • Review, analyze and manage dynamic models (PSS/e and PSCAD) for proposed generation additions and changes for inverter-based resources such as: wind turbines, battery energy storage systems, and solar installations, along with conventional generation, hybrid resource, and other dynamic transmission equipment such as Flexible AC Transmission devices or High Voltage DC equipment
  • Conduct transmission system impact assessments of proposed changes to generation, which may involve steady state, transient stability, and electromagnetic transient analyses
  • Assist in the analysis and preparation of reports related to transmission system studies
  • Work closely with New England stakeholders such as Transmission and Distribution Owners and Operators, Generation Owners and Developers, and State Regulators,
  • Develop recommendations for New England regional standards and study practices
  • Support voluntary and mandatory compliance with local and national standards from regulatory groups like NPCC, NERC, FERC, IEEE, CIGRE, and IEC

What you need to be successful in this role:

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Power Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Electrical & Computer Systems Engineering is required. Master’s Degree preferred.
  • Experience in electric power system network analysis, transmission planning, and assessment techniques, specifically transient stability analysis using PSS/E, and Electromagnetic Transients analyses using PSCAD
  • Proficiency with Python or other similar scripting language
  • Strong understanding of control theory and power system dynamics
  • Knowledge of NERC, NPCC, and Transmission Planner/Planning Coordinator planning reliability standards and criteria
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment with minimal supervision
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to travel to attend stakeholder meetings, working groups and conferences
  • Desired but not required:
    • Registered Professional Engineer or Engineer-In-Training
    • Experience participating in stakeholder and industry committee activities
    • Knowledge of ISO/NEPOOL tariff, markets and processes
    • Familiarity with Electromagnetic transient analysis (EMTP/PSCAD)
    • Understanding of Short circuit analysis (Aspen One-Liner)
