Job Description

Are you a dynamic and results-driven Senior Project Manager looking to take your career to the next level?  Join our team and play a critical role in planning, coordinating, and executing high-impact nuclear projects in the Southeast! If you thrive in a fast-paced environment and enjoy working on complex projects, this is the opportunity you’ve been waiting for.

Details:

MATRIX is seeking an Expert Project Manager to support major component heavy rigging operations at multiple nuclear power generation facilities in the Southeast. This role is ideal for a seasoned professional with extensive experience in nuclear outage work management, execution, and project management, combined with a deep technical expertise in heavy lifting and rigging operations.

You will be responsible for the full lifecycle of planning and execution highly-complex projects involving removal and replacement of large nuclear plant components such as generator stators, condensers, steam generators, and feedwater heaters. You’ll work closely with site outage teams to safely integrate these critical lifts into the broader outage schedule—while ensuring strict regulatory and safety compliance.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Planning & Engineering Interface
    1. Lead project planning, outage integration, logistics, and technical constraints.
    2. Coordinate closely with internal and external engineering teams to ensure alignment with submittal requirements and project objectives.
    3. Guide the development of technically sound lifting and rigging strategies.
  2. Client Engagement
    1. Serve as the primary point of contact for utility engineering, planning, scheduling, and executive stakeholders.
    2. Communicate project approaches clearly and confidently, building consensus and managing expectations.
    3. Represent Barnhart in strategic planning meetings, project / outage reviews, and cross-organizational discussions.
  3. Stakeholder Coordination:
    1. Collaborate with plant operations, maintenance, and outage planning teams to integrate heavy lift activities into the broader project schedule.
    2. Act as technical liaison with plant personnel, equipment manufacturers, general contractors, and third-party engineering firms.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Civil, or Nuclear Engineering; additional experience in utility operations, project / program management, or capital project planning strongly preferred. Work experience in place of formal education will be considered.

Experience: 10+ years of utility-scale capital project experience, ideally involved with outages and client management. Experience in the nuclear sector is preferred.

Professional Skills: Strong interpersonal and presentation skills, with the ability to build rapport, convey confidence in the Barnhart plan, and influence project direction through clear communication and industry expertise.

  1. Technical Skills:
    1. Proficiency in managing integrated schedules, long-lead planning, and outage coordination. Skilled in aligning project milestones with engineering deliverables and contractual deadlines.
    2. Strong understanding of engineering workflows in support of major equipment replacements, including the review and coordination of lift plans, design packages, technical specifications, and submittals. Capable of translating engineering designs into actionable project plans.
    3. Familiarity with nuclear plant operations, system constraints, and outage sequencing. Ability to work across all applicable departments to ensure seamless integration of project work.
    4. Proficient in preparing and delivering technical presentations, reports, and project status updates tailored to utility stakeholders and executive sponsors. Comfortable communicating complex technical content to non-technical audiences.
    5. Familiarity with nuclear plant systems, safety protocols, and regulatory requirements.

Soft Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills for engaging with clients, site managers, and team members; adept at cross-functional collaboration with departments like engineering and operations; proficient in preparing and presenting project reports, technical documentation, and lift plans.

Physical Requirements: Willingness to travel to project sites as needed. Ability to work in a variety of environments, including outdoor and construction sites, and conduct on-site inspections, which may involve standing, walking, crawling, and climbing ladders or scaffolding.

Fit for Duty: Must pass a drug test, fit for duty and background check

Additional Details:

  • Based out of a regional office in Chesapeake, VA, with regular travel to nuclear plant sites as needed. Some remote work during certain project phases would be considered.
  • This role requires deep technical expertise in heavy lift planning and execution utilizing alternative lifting/handling equipment.
  • Standard work schedule is 5/8s, with potential ramp-up to 7/12s during key outage periods.
  • Must be able to attain a badge at a nuclear power facility. (background check, drug testing, etc.)
