The Aerospace Materials Engineer will provide technical materials engineering expertise to support the Material and Processes Laboratory at NASAs Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) to support the International Space Station (ISS), and future space systems including those for extended operations on the Moon and Mars. This role involves materials engineering analysis, mechanical design, testing, and analysis to provide timely materials selection and control expertise for all MSFC programs.
Responsibilities
Select appropriate materials for different applications in manufacturing and development processes.
Develop new materials to meet specific needs and challenges.
Analyze and test materials under different conditions to evaluate performance and safety.
Generate detailed reports on the findings of materials testing.
Work closely with design engineers to ensure materials meet necessary specifications and NASA standards.
Monitor and improve manufacturing processes to maintain material quality and efficiency.
Develop materials usage agreements and material usage lists.
Write material control plans and participate in design reviews.
Support testbed development, recommend required tests, and report results.
Job Requirements:
A degree in Materials, Aerospace or Mechanical is required. A degree from an ABET accredited university is preferred. Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a minimum of a PhD with at least 7 years or experience, a master's with at least 8 years of experience, or BS with at least 10 years of experience.
Required:
Minimum of 2 years of applicable experience in Aerospace systems and analysis required
Proven experience as a Material Engineer or similar role
Strong knowledge of materials science and engineering principles
Experience conducting materials testing and analysis
Familiarity with manufacturing processes and materials sourcing
Desired:
Working knowledge of NASA systems and procedures
Working knowledge of Aerospace flight system component configuration and analysis
Training in safely using and/or designing oxygen systems
Training in safely using and/or designing hydrogen systems
