Description

POSITION PURPOSE

The Environmental Engineer will primarily be working remotely and traveling periodically to large industrial facilities such as refineries, chemical plants, and oil & gas facilities. The primary responsibility is to focus on day-to-day process development, implementation, and improvement of environmental related tasks specific to refinery operations. Focus areas for this role will be greenhouse gas emissions tracking, benzene waste operations (BWON), leak detection and repair, and general clean air act compliance. The first 6 months will include on the job, in the field training and monitoring work. The goal of this position will be to develop and provide a world class, industry-leading program at a client location with the support of veteran consulting and field teams.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES

Develop, implement, and improve processes to maintain regulatory compliance for environmental permits and regulations as it relates to refinery operations. This requires the ability to interpret complex technical, legal, and regulatory language. (LDAR/BWON)

Perform complex emission calculations to support permit applications, regulatory requirements, and health risk assessments.

Ability to read and understand P&IDs to identify process vessels, exchangers, pumps, valves, direction of flow, etc.

Collect information and maintain environmental data records to track compliance parameters.

Negotiate issues from a technical perspective with a broad spectrum of stakeholders (e.g., agencies, contractors, internal resources) with the support of senior environmental staff. This includes negotiation and management of any ongoing compliance issues with applicable agencies using strong verbal and writing skills.

Engage in new rule development by contributing both a technical and regulatory effort. Includes coordinating with multiple stakeholders to implement new regulations.

Lead/participate in agency inspections and compliance/enforcement activities.

Lead/participate in internal and external regulatory audits.

Promote the identification and development of environmental opportunities and improvements to the organization.

Monitor and evaluate emerging environmental regulatory requirements for business impact.

Application of technical competencies and leadership skills to drive refinery compliance assurance and problem resolution.

Management of multiple activities with varying timelines and stakeholder engagement.

Development of a broad range of technical skills and capabilities to support the environmental team.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:

BS Engineering or science disciplines required

3-5 years of process, civil, or environmental engineering

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

Industrial experience preferred. Knowledge of P&IDs is preferred, and experience in a refinery setting a plus!

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES AND REQUIREMENTS OF THIS POSITION

TALKING: Superior ability to speak effectively and communicate clearly.

AVERAGE HEARING: Ability to hear average conversations.

REPETITIVE MOTION: The employee is regularly required to type throughout the day as well as stand, sit, bend, kneel, squat, and walk for long periods of time.

FINGER DEXTERITY: The employee is regularly required to use hands to type and maneuver a mouse.

AVERAGE VISION: Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

PHYSICAL STRENGTH: This job may require lifting of up to 50 pounds occasionally as well as ascending heights to 300 feet.

TRAVEL: Less than 25% travel is expected for first 6 months.

MENTAL ACTIVITIES AND REQUIREMENTS OF THIS POSITION

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to effectively communicate with customers and relay information to the appropriate PROtect team members. Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in varying situations.

MATHEMATICS ABILITY: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

LANGUAGE ABILITY: Ability to read and interpret documents as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of PROtect.
