This role of Civil Engineer at our firm is responsible for the preparation of detailed calculations, design drawings, design reports and construction contract documents for our wide variety of projects that may vary from the traditional civil engineering infrastructure of other firms. Additional responsibilities include development of conceptual designs, preliminary design reports, technical memoranda, construction cost estimates and final plans and specifications for a wide variety projects.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

As a member of our team you will be responsible to:

  • Prepare plans and design calculations using civil engineering principles for a wide variety of projects that may include varying project elements from traditional civil infrastructure to remote wildland watershed restoration;
  • Assist with the preparation of Engineers’ Opinions of Probable Cost;
  • Coordination and communication with other team engineers, agency staff, clients, and other NCDE team members who are educated and trained in ecological, biological and environmental sciences;
  • Participate in field data collection which may include use of survey grade RTK GPS equipment; basic laser level, survey rods and measuring tapes; and other data collection equipment;
  • Perform hydrologic and hydraulic analyses;
  • Attend project meetings and communication with clients and/or stakeholders;
  • Assist in developing technical documents, including basis of design reports, presentations, exhibits/figures, drawings, tables, specifications, etc.;
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned by the Project Manager or Project Lead;
  • Perform calculations to analyze and design project elements using software such as HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, HydroCAD, MS Excel, Rivermorph and other industry-standard applications;
  • Develop construction documents using Autodesk Civil 3D;
  • Implement sustainable engineering design principles;
  • Coordinate with other NCDE team members of other disciplines and outside consultants to ensure compatibility with the total design of the project;
  • Assists in the evaluation and selection of construction materials;
  • Prepare and revise documentation in various project phases, including site plans, layout control and details;
  • Assist in the construction administration of projects, including reviewing and responding to contractor material submittals, RFI's, and change order requests;
  • and Perform other related work as assigned within the firm.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The candidate should enjoy working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment with multiple team members of differing disciplines and expertise who will have input on the overall project designs to produce quality deliverables. This candidate must have the ability to participate in complex and varied projects, work on multiple projects simultaneously, exercise sound engineering judgement and consistently meet project deadlines while maintaining a high level of quality. This candidate will need to effectively communicate professionally and respectfully with all levels of the project team, including technicians, engineers, scientists, sub-consultants, contractors and clients.  The ideal candidate should:

  • Have ability to use AutoCAD Civil 3D. The preferred level of ability is competency in Civil3D, but lesser experience will be considered.
  • Have the ability to convey engineering decisions and concepts to both non-technical and technically based audiences.
  • Demonstrate strong technical writing skills.
  • Work within a variety of team environments, including varying team sizes and personnel.
  • Periodically travel to remote locations and participate in the collection of field data.
  • Organize and multi-task efficiently.
  • Prioritize and meet multiple deadlines.
  • Be familiar with the elements and design conditions of the American southwest and have familiarity with the typical requirements needed for state/local permitting and to navigate the federal permitting system (404 Clean Water Act, FEMA, etc.).
  • Having attended the Wildland Hydrology short courses on stream classification and river restoration is a plus. 

Education, Experience and Certifications:

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or related engineering discipline from an accredited University.
  • Prior civil engineering experience in design, producing plans, specifications and estimates and be able to take projects from start to finish without detailed direction is preferred.
  • Competence in AutoCAD Civil3D with ability to produce engineered construction plans, specifications and estimates is preferred.  However, lesser experience levels will be considered.
  • PE registration or EIT on track to obtaining a PE.   
  • Must be currently certified to work in the US.

LOCATION: This position is at our Flagstaff office.  A New Mexico residency will also be considered for remote work, depending upon experience level.
