Conemaugh Generating Station is a 2-Unit, 1700-MW rated coal-fired power plant. The Mechanical Engineer provides support to the Technical, Operations and Maintenance departments to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the station. Assists in various technical functions and performs root cause failure analysis to identify problems and recommend appropriate solutions. Provides engineering design services and/or information for the design and installation of capital projects. Provides support for major station programs such as availability, thermal performance, process improvement and station modification. Must be strong in technical skills, strong communication skills, as well as fluent in the use of computers, and willing to work in a power plant environment. The person must be self-motivated.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform work assignments in compliance with OSHA requirements.
- Provides support to ensure problem resolution is achieved and systems are operated and maintained correctly and in the most cost-effective manner. This involves troubleshooting, failure analysis, testing, equipment monitoring, establishing operating guidelines and be available for problem solving for a 24/7 operation.
- Provides support to the Operations and Maintenance Departments for equipment problems, compiling spare parts lists for new and existing equipment, recommending and performing training, and actively serving on appropriate teams.
- Assists with start-up, testing, and troubleshooting of capital and maintenance projects and ensures performance guarantees are met and documentation is updated.
- Provides support and performs plant modification design services such as specifying material, writing Bills of Material, purchasing material and services, creating and revising drawings, supervising installation and resolving problems.
- Provides overall direction to maintain plant equipment which includes: monitoring equipment, inspections, testing, reports, materials, specification preparation, fabrications, drawings, procedures, cost control, availability improvements, operational improvements, and evaluations.
- Provides back-up support for other systems as assigned.
- Develops and manages O&M and Capital budget requirements for areas of responsibilities
- While the position will be based at Conemaugh Generating Station, the successful candidate will also be responsible for similar duties at the Keystone Generating Station, so it is imperative that the Mechanical Engineer have the ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously at both sites, on schedule and to budget.
- Completes tasks to support the Technical Manager in the performance of his responsibilities to support the station goals.
Requirements
- BS Degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited college or university is preferred; candidates with degrees in related fields and strong relevant experience will also be considered.
- 5-10 years technical experience in an industrial setting is required.
- Understanding of hydraulics, fluid dynamics, friction, heat transfer, lubrication, bearing design, vibration analysis, corrosion, erosion, material properties, and resulting stresses which lead to failures.
- Ability to define and perform testing to identify problems, and interpret obtained field data and translate it into useful information.
- Aptitude to work within the Company's Engineering guidelines and codes such as ASME.
- Knowledge of basic plant systems and operations.
- Understanding of OSHA safety requirements
- Fluent Computer skills in Microsoft Office software
- Demonstrated Communication Skills
Working Conditions
- Power plant environment. Work environment includes working out of doors, working at heights, high/low ambient temperatures and high humidity areas at generating unit work locations. Work in all temperatures and climate conditions. Some temperatures can be extreme.
- Work in and around rotating equipment, high voltage electrical equipment, and high noise areas.
- Work in confined spaces, some requiring the use of respirators and other protective equipment.
- Emergency situations may require the use of a respirator.
- Established facial hair in the sealing area of a respirator is not permitted.
- OSHA approved footwear is required.
- Available for plant callouts related to equipment repair.
Applicants must possess a valid driver's license and maintain a clean driving record, as this position requires occasional travel for company business. Candidates should be comfortable operating a vehicle as part of their job responsibilities and must meet any applicable company and insurance requirements.
