HX5 is currently seeking an Engineering Technician to work onsite in a laboratory environment at Redstone Arsenal.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Constructs components, subunits, or simple models or adapts standard equipment; may troubleshoot and correct malfunctions.
  • Follows specific layout and scientific diagrams to construct and package simple devices and subunits of equipment.
  • Conducts various tests or experiments which may require minor modifications in test setups or procedures as well as subjective judgments in measurement, selecting, preparing, and operating standard test equipment and records test data.
  • Assemble or construct standard equipment or parts following specific instructions.
  • Service and repair simple instruments or equipment as directed.
  • Conduct tests using established methods and operate test equipment.
  • Prepare test specimens and accurately record and verify test data.
  • Extract and process engineering data field notes, manuals, lab reports, etc., processing data, identifying errors or inconsistencies, selecting methods of data presentation.
  • Identify deviations caused by equipment issues or observational errors.
  • Present processed data in prescribed formats for engineering review.
  • Assist in design modification by compiling data related to design, specifications, and materials that are pertinent to specific items of equipment or component parts; develop information concerning previous operational failures and modifications and use judgment and initiative to recognize inconsistencies or gaps in data and seek sources to clarify information.

Education and Experience:

  • High school graduate or GED
  • Some practical knowledge of science or engineering
  • Some practical knowledge of mathematics
  • Must be able to work from written and verbal instructions
  • Good communication (written and verbal) skills
  • Must be dependable and willing to work hours outside the normal schedule
  • Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and workmanship
  • Experience reading and understanding specifications and detailed work instructions

Preferred Experience:

  • Associate degree or high school diploma and/or 3 years equivalent technical experience
  • Experience should include a working knowledge of Microsoft Windows Operating Systems for personal computers and MS Office products
  • Experience with forklifts, aerial lifts, and bridge cranes

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:
This is a full-time position requiring 40 hours per week requiring 10-hour workdays Monday thru Thursday.

Other Position Requirements:

  • Proof of U.S. Citizenship or US Permanent Residency is a requirement for this position.
  • Must be able to complete a U.S. government background investigation.
  • Requires ability to obtain and maintain NASA Public Trust background screening requirements.
  • Must be able to pass a MSFC physical examination for any required safety-related certifications.
  • All positions supporting the METTS III contract are subject to NASA medical screenings at the start of employment and annually, as determined by the outcomes of the Safety, Health, and Environmental Job Assessment Questionnaire.
  • With or without reasonable accommodation must be able to operate various machines, lift, bend or crouch occasionally.
  • Must be able to work independently or with a team. Communicate clearly.

Work Environment:
Operate within specialized, hazardous research and test facilities using required certifications. The position operates in unique, one of a kind, and/or hazardous research and test facilities, test stands, laboratories, chambers, equipment, and are required to have highly specialized skills that in many cases can only be obtained through specialized training, on the job work experience, and certification(s). Examples of specialized operational environments include:

  • Cryogenics: Liquid Hydrogen, Liquid Oxygen, Liquid Nitrogen, Liquid Helium
  • Gaseous Hydrogen, Gaseous Oxygen, Gaseous Nitrogen, Gaseous Helium
  • High Pressure Systems
  • Hypergols
  • Solid Propellants
  • Explosives
  • Electrical Instrumentation and Controls Systems and Components Associated with Hazardous Operations
  • Mechanical Systems and Components Associated with Hazardous Operations
  • Large and/or Complex Facilities, Test Stands, Equipment, Special Test Equipment, and Test Articles
  • Specialized Handing, Transportation, Operation of One of a Kind Test Articles and Associated Components
