Job Title: Staff Engineer Advanced Development

Job Description

The Staff Engineer Advanced Development designs and implements advanced control and monitoring algorithms for power conversion and power generation systems, while developing tools that support the broader engineering organization. This role serves as a technical expert in software and model-based design, leading the creation of predictive maintenance, optimization, and control strategies, and participating in reviews and troubleshooting across the business. The position combines extensive work in MATLAB/Simulink with hands-on validation in the lab to deliver robust, high-performance solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement predictive maintenance algorithms to improve system reliability and reduce cost of ownership.
  • Implement optimization algorithms to enhance the performance of existing and future power conversion and generation designs.
  • Develop control algorithms in Simulink and use automatic code generation to deploy C++ code to embedded and other target environments.
  • Design and implement feedback and model predictive control algorithms that meet defined performance and robustness requirements.
  • Develop models of engines, alternators, transformers, and alternative energy sources at various levels of fidelity for reuse in system simulations.
  • Validate new algorithms in simulated environments and on hardware to ensure performance, robustness, and reliability.
  • Integrate new designs and algorithms into existing code bases while maintaining code quality and compatibility.
  • Develop and deploy internal PC-based tools that accelerate design work and improve productivity for internal engineering customers.
  • Apply and promote best design practices for code development, documentation, and testing within the engineering organization.
  • Collaborate with a small engineering team to review designs, troubleshoot complex issues, and continuously improve system performance.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution.
  • 5+ years of relevant work experience, depending on educational experience.
  • At least 3 years of experience in systems or electronics simulations.
  • Strong technical experience with MATLAB and Simulink for modeling, simulation, and control development.
  • Proficiency in C++ for implementing and deploying automatically generated code.
  • Experience with C# for developing internal PC-based tools and related software.
  • Working knowledge in at least one of the following areas: electrical machines, power electronics, or engines.
  • Ability to design and validate control and monitoring algorithms in both simulated and hardware environments.
  • Excellent quantitative and qualitative analytical skills, with the ability to interpret complex data and simulation results.
  • Strong understanding of simulation practices, including solver selection and simulation validation methods in control applications.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Masters degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field is preferred.
  • Experience developing voltage and current regulation control systems.
  • Experience with Simulink Embedded Coder for automatic code generation and deployment.
  • Experience with object-oriented MATLAB programming for scalable and maintainable code.
  • Experience with modeling and simulating engines, alternators, transformers, and alternative energy sources.
  • Familiarity with best practices in software engineering, including version control, code reviews, and structured testing.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills applied to complex electrical and control systems.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within a small, specialized engineering team and support cross-functional stakeholders.

Work Environment

This role primarily uses MATLAB and Simulink as the main engineering tools for developing control algorithms, plant models, and for analyzing data. The workday typically involves a balance between office-based development and lab-based activities, where the engineer collects data, runs tests, and validates algorithms on hardware. The engineer works as part of a small team of approximately six people when fully staffed, fostering close collaboration and knowledge sharing. The environment emphasizes rigorous simulation, careful validation, and adherence to best practices in model-based design and software development.
