Design Engineer Jobs in District of Columbia

A Design Engineer in the engineering industry is primarily responsible for researching and developing new ideas for products, systems or components, and creating both initial sketches and detailed design plans using computer-aided design (CAD) software. They liaise with clients, manufacturers, and other professionals to understand design requirements, ensure feasibility of design, and oversee the production process. Design Engineers also test prototypes, modify designs, and ensure compliance with applicable safety regulations.

Key skills for a Design Engineer include strong problem-solving abilities, excellent attention to detail, proficiency in CAD software, and robust knowledge of engineering principles. Additionally, good communication and collaboration skills are crucial for liaising with different stakeholders. A degree in mechanical, electrical, civil, or related engineering field is typically required. Some employers may prefer candidates with a Professional Engineer (PE) certification. Prior experience as a Junior Engineer, CAD Technician, or Mechanical Drafter can be beneficial stepping stones towards a career as a Design Engineer.
